FIELD: mechanical engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to machine building and can be used for surface hardening of shafts with diameter from 5 to 15 mm, made from chromium-nickel steels of austenitic-ferrite class. Method includes exposure of shaft surface to pulsed laser radiation of solid-state laser with wavelength of 1.06 mcm, wherein shaft processing is carried out at its rotational and translational movement relative to stationary laser using radiation with processing intensity from 10 to 29.8 J/mm2×s and linear speed of rotational movement from 90 to 150 mm/min with formation of hardened layer on shaft surface in form of annular tracks with width of 0.8 mm without overlapping.
EFFECT: use of the invention increases fatigue strength of shafts of small diameter, which are made from high-alloyed chromium-nickel steels of austenitic-ferrite class.
