FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry, specifically to a method of producing alkyl nitrates, which are used as a cetane-enhancing additive. Method of producing alkyl nitrates by nitration of n-butanol or 2-ethylhexanol while stirring for 1-1.5 hours at temperature of 0-20 °C with water-acid mixture with weight content 45-70% H2SO4 and 10-30% HNO3 with further settling of the reaction mass for separation of the organic and acidic layer is characterized by the fact that the organic layer is sent for extraction of water, acids and alcohol with an aqueous solution containing by weight 8-15% Na2SO4 and 1.5-3% NaOH at temperature of 5-30 °C by stirring for 0.5-1 h with further settling and separation of a layer of alkyl nitrates. Content of basic substance is not less than 99%, with content of dissolved water of 0.01-0.1%.
EFFECT: providing a method of producing desired alkyl nitrates with alcohol conversion of 98.4-99.8% and selectivity of 99.7-99.9%, as well as reduced operating costs.
