FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to processing of secondary raw materials, namely to production of aluminium fluoride from cryolite bath materials. Method involves reaction of cryolite bath materials with aluminium sulphate to obtain a reaction product containing aluminium fluoride. Impurities are removed from the obtained reaction product to obtain this purified product containing aluminium fluoride. Impurities include at least one of sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca), wherein as a result of the removal step, the purified product contains not more than 0.2 wt.% of calcium. Removal of impurities involves at least one of (i) heating the reaction product, (ii) bringing the reaction product into contact with an acid or (iii) a combination of (i) and (ii).

EFFECT: enabling removal of all detectable amounts of calcium, magnesium and almost all sodium.
