FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene and a method for production thereof. Said ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene has viscosity-average molecular weight of 150–1000 × 104 g/mol, content of metal elements 0–50 mln-1 and satisfies at least one of condition (1) and condition (2), where condition (1): modulus of elasticity in tension is more than 250 MPa, and condition (2): Young's modulus is more than 300 MPa. Method of producing ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene includes suspension polymerisation in the absence of hydrogen gas of starting materials for producing polyethylene with a non-metallocene catalyst on a support as a base catalyst, with a cocatalyst, with a polymerisation solvent, which is an alkane solvent having a boiling point of 5–55 °C, or a mixed alkane solvent having a saturated vapor pressure of 20 °C 20–150 kPa. Polymerization temperature is 50–100 °C, polymerisation pressure is 0.4–4.0 MPa and polymerisation activity is higher than 2 × 104 g of polyethylene/g of basic catalyst.

EFFECT: ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene has high tensile modulus, high mechanical characteristics, high melting point, low content of metal elements and ash content, and its production method is simple, technically flexible and adjustable.
