FIELD: machining of metals. SUBSTANCE: electron gun has cathode installed on insulator, controlling grid and anode mounted in series in vacuum chamber. Machined article is positioned behind anode. Grid is manufactured from set of parallel electrodes insulated from each other, each connected to grounded anode through individual controlled resistor. Electrodes can be produced in the form of parallel wires, for instance graphite fibres. Current of beam hitting electrodes of grid provides for potential on them determined by value of resistor placed into circuit of electrode. Value of accelerating voltage close to different sections of cathode can be controlled thanks to selection of resistors and consequently value of current pick-off can be regulated. Distribution of current density and power of beam over surface of machined articles is set by required mode of machining. EFFECT: provision for control over distribution of density of current of beam over machined article across cross-section. 2 dwg, 1 tbl
