FIELD: catalytic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: catalyst has, wt.-% CuO 40.0; ZnO 30.0; NiO 0-2, and calcium aluminate the rest. Catalyst is prepared by dry mixing basic nickel carbonate and/or double basic copper and zinc carbonate salt with calcium aluminates followed by granules forming and hydrothermal treatment of granules (from 15-20 to 70-100 C) at heating rate 0.25-1 C/min. Then granules were kept in water and dried at 100-120 C. Method ensures to increase catalyst activity by 1.5-2-fold, stability by 10-20% mechanical strength by 2-fold. Harmful flow and atmosphere exhaust were excluded. EFFECT: enhanced quality of catalyst. 3 tbl
