FIELD: chemistry of inorganic compounds. SUBSTANCE: synthesis is carried out by interaction of elemental (white) phosphorus with β--hydroxyethyltrimethylammonium hydroxide and water at the mole ratio of reagents P4:[(CH3)NCH2CH2OH]OH:H2O]= = (1:5)-6.5:8-30 in solvent medium at 40-80 C followed by treatment of reaction mass with equimole quantity of sodium hydroxide and recovery to the cycle with phosphorus and the second reaction product formed - β--hydroxyethyltrimethylammonium hydroxide. Yield of sodium hypophosphite is 74-84,7% (as measured for phosphorus taken), IRS cm-1: 1210 (R=C), 2310, 2360 (P-H), NMR31P:δ , = 8 million part, 1 P-H 540 Hz (1-2-1).
