FIELD: instrument engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves the steps of: additionally measuring time t1 of the beginning and time t2 of stopping an atmospheric formation-caused distortion of radar signal on the base of information obtained from satellite-borne sideways-looking radars, measuring altitude h of underlying surface and altitude h of zero isothermal surface above the sea level in the investigated region. The information on the presence of hail area in the atmospheric formation zone is derived from satisfaction of the condition t2-t1≥(Ho-h)/(C·Cosθ), where c is light velocity, θ is an angle between the direction of radiation and local vertical.
