FIELD: thermal treatment of surfaces. SUBSTANCE: method for hardening steel products consists in multiple heating of a product surface to the hardening temperature by electron beam pulses having pulse duration (0,5-3)·10-6 s, electron energy 10-50 keV, energy density 2-5 J/cm2, and interpulse interval not lower than the value defined from an expression presented in the description. Prior to that a coating of refractory metals nitrides is applied to the surface of the object. EFFECT: improved quality of the product. 3 tbl
