FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: device for effecting the method has base 1 made in the form of a ring with a predetermined cross-section area, measuring unit 2 made in the form of a plurality of linear dimension sensors 4 located along the inner perimeter of ring 1 and dividing its cross-section area into sectors 6. The method involves the steps of: making the cross-section of ring 1 coincident with a plane of cross- section being measured, measuring distance from each sensor 4 to the object being measured along generators of respective sectors 6 and computing the object cross-section area as a difference between the predetermined area of cross-section of ring 1 and a sum of areas of portions 12 of sectors 6 interposed between measured lengths. EFFECT: enhanced accuracy in determining cross-section area of moving round timber. 1 dwg
