FIELD: metallurgy; continuous metal casting. SUBSTANCE: method involves the use of ultrasonic signal waves measured by searching head and the reflected signal parameters measured by the same head. When measuring metal level along working wall of mold, pulses of surface ultrasonic wave are sent and the time of arrival of reflected signals of ultrasonic wave shows the position of metal level in mold. Device for realization of method comprises indicator unit and searching head whose input is connected to generator output. Device also has time interval measuring unit whose first output is connected to generator of ultrasonic vibrations while the second one, to the searching head . The output of time interval unit is connected to indicator unit. EFFECT: improved functional and operating characteristics. 2 cl, 1 dwg
