FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method involves delivery of liquid metal into mold, drawing ingot from mold at a varying rate, putting mold in reciprocating motion, delivering pulsed beam of ultrasonic wave to working walls of mold, and determining the value of reciprocating mold motion. Pulsed beam of surface ultrasonic wave is directed across the ingot over the perimeter of one of working walls. The width of pulsed beam of ultrasonic wave is set at 1.5-50.0 of mold reciprocating amplitude then the signal corresponding to current position of mold is subtracted from the amplitude of attenuated signal. EFFECT: improved quality of continuously-cast ingots achieved due to higher accuracy of measuring metal level in mold. 3 dwg, 1 tbl
