FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method involves delivery of liquid metal into tubular mold, drawing rectangular ingot at varying rate therefrom, feeding pulsed beams of surface ultrasonic wave to working walls of the mold, imparting reciprocating motion to the mold, and determining the value of mold motion in the course of its reciprocation. Pulses of surface ultrasonic wave are sent diagonally from one of the corners of the mold tube and the signal is received along the diagonal of the adjacent corner of the tube side. The width of the pulsed beams of ultrasonic wave is set within 0.5-50.0 the amplitude of mold reciprocating motion then the signal corresponding to the current position of the mold is subtracted from the amplitude of the attenuated signal. EFFECT: quality of ingots improved due to higher accuracy of measuring metal level in tubular mold. 2 dwg
