FIELD: transportation machine building. SUBSTANCE: neutral is switched on by applying an axial force to the clutch of a gear being switch off. Said axial force shall be appropriate to switch off only a low-loaded transmission and to unload the transmission by decreasing or increasing the engine torque. The gear is selected by preparing the gearshift mechanism to gear shifting. The angular speeds are equalized of a secondary shaft and the gear being switched on by deceleration the engine as intensively as possible (if the angular speed of the gear being switched on is higher as those of the secondary shaft) or, in the opposite case, by accelerating the engine as intensively as possible, and then the clutch of the gear being switched on is shifted in the ON position at the synchronization moment when the time left to equalizing the speeds of a secondary shaft and the gear being switched on equals the gearshift mechanism response time. The engine is released from control at the synchronization moment when the time left to equalizing the speeds of a secondary shaft and the gear being switched on equals the engine control mechanism response time. In the case that the angular speed difference at the start of the synchronization is not sufficient for the synchronization, then the required difference is created by force by means of accelerating or deceleration of the engine.
