The gases are blown into space between electrodes located around a circle and furnace wall 3. Generated intensive gas flow sucks in reaction gases generated from scrap or generated smelt and burns them. Generated heat is transferred to the scrap and/or smelt at efficiency of at least 70 per cent. Nozzles 2 located predominantly below bath surface, predominantly in the furnace bottom, are used to feed gases, predominantly oxidizing ones, and solids, in particular carbon bearing fuels, are fed in the smelt through one or several hollow electrodes, lined with wear-resistant material. EFFECT: increased energy supply to the electric arc furnace resulted in decreased smelting time with improved economy of the process. 11 cl, 3 dwg
