FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method for afterburning active burnable gases comprises feed at least one hollow swirl jet of oxidizing gas in the direction of bath surface. Degree of jet swirling within 0.1 to 0.5 is set as to its tangential and axial speed for effective afterburning gases generated over the bath and feeding thermal energy generated by the gases to the bath. The jet is fed to the bath surface at 10 to 90 ° angle. Oxidizing gases may be fed in the form of preheated round jet. Oxygen, air or mixtures of inert gas, CO2, H2O vapors and O2 are used as oxidizing gases. A mean to select swirling degree in the device to implement the method is made in the form of member installed inside annular nozzle of an oxygen lance. The member is moved inside nozzle to feed oxidant. Diameter of member is twice as large as that for width of nozzle ring set at angle of 100 to 180 ° to axis of body directed to bath surface.
