FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method involves covering ingot mold with heat-insulating cover, which does not contact with melt upon filling ingot mold with steel; slightly opening heat-insulating cover upon expiration of 1/3-2/3 of total ingot hardening time; spilling exothermal mixture components onto steel surface and repeatedly mounting heat-insulating cover to accomplish ingot hardening. EFFECT: reduced loss of steel with top discard. 2 dwg
