FIELD: combatting fires in wells. SUBSTANCE: device has housing with chamber filled with extinguishant, for example, water with surface active matter and antipyren. Device has blackened heat absorbing surface and nozzle (nozzles) for discharging vapour in direction oriented to seat of fire. Vapour forming chamber may be provided with thermal element, charge of thermit with powder igniter which operates at moment of ignition to intensify formation of vapour in chamber; powder igniter may also be actuated by electric primer at moment of ignition, for example in enclosed space (materials stowage). Procedure consists in heating the spesial volume of liquid by heat of fire till formation of vapour, instantly freeing the vapour from volume and creating shock wave by vapour for combatting separate column of fire or filling the enclosed volume with vapour which reliably prevents repeated ignition in either case since heat of vaporization is considerable and great amount of heat taken from seat of fire is required for supporting the vapour phases.
