FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: the product includes sulfur-substituted mevinic acid derivatives of the formula I wherein X is hydrogen and S(O)₃-R₁ and Y is hydrogen and S(O)₃-R₂ in which R₁ and R ₂ are each hydrogen, acetyl, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, benzyl or alkoxycarbonylalkyl, each of which may be substituted with hydroxyl or halogen, or R₁ and R₂ are together alkylene; m and n are 0-2, except that X and Y are other then hydrogen; X is a group (a) or (b) in which R₃ is hydrogen or an alkali metal. A protected mevinic acid derivative is prepared by acylation and treatment with thioacid followed by removal of the protective group with treatment with a pyridine hydrogen fluoride salt in an organic solvent, and if necessary, by hydrolysis of the resulting compound with an alkali metal base.
