FIELD: compressor engineering. SUBSTANCE: device for obtaining compressed air has driving and working chambers provided with controlled inlet and outlet valves and separated with water piston. The driving chamber is in communication with the water source and source of compressing gas. The working chamber is in communication with the source of air to be compressed. The device is provided with pipe line with the stop valve through which the chambers are interconnected. The source of compressing gas is constructed as a plant for electrolysis of water having tanks for oxygen and hydrogen arranged in a water reservoir at the depth at which hydrostatic pressure is no less than the finish pressure of the compressed air. At least one of the tanks is connected with the driving chamber through the inlet valve. To realize the method working chamber is filled with air to be compressed, compressing gas, which is separated from the air to be compressed with a water piston, is fed to the driving chamber, and the air is compressed with the water piston. The compressing gas is preliminary obtained by electrolysis of water in the reservoir at the depth at which hydrostatic pressure is no less than the finish pressure of the compressed air.
