FIELD: compaction of ballast of railroad track. SUBSTANCE: tamper unit includes a frame, mounted on vertical guides and connected with a hydraulic cylinder for lifting/descending in vertical direction, two levers 2,3, in their mean portions being jointly connected with the frame. Upper end portions of the levers 2,3 are mutually connected by the hydraulic cylinder 4 for drawing together/drawing apart the tampers; a rod cavity and a rod-free cavity of the cylinder 4 are joined with a hydraulic system of the machine. The tampers are arranged in lower portions of the levers. A centering device has two inclined tie rods 8,9, whose one ends are connected with the levers 2,3 and whose other ends are connected with opposite ends of two-arm lever, being jointly secured to the frame. Rubber-metallic members are arranged on end portions of the tie rods, these members have non-linear rigidity characteristics. EFFECT: enhanced structure of the unit. 1 cl, 2 dwg
