FIELD: railway equipment. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to mechanized track instrument to conduct field operations, namely to devices to drill various holes in rails of different hardness and types. Portable rail drilling machine has frame 2 with clamp and separable members for interaction with rail, driving shaft 4 and driven spindle 5 mounted in frame and coupled with uniaxial gear transmissions 7, 8, 9 and 10 and drill bit attached to tip of spindle 5 facing rail. At least one transmission 9 or 10 to drive spindle is helical with driven gear 10 made fast to spindle 5. Its teeth have direction opposite of that of rotation of spindle 5. Width of gear ring of driving gear 9 of this transmission exceeds width of gear ring of driven gear 10 by 1.01-1.10 of magnitude of spindle stroke. Number of teeth of gear of spindle 5 is bigger or smaller than that of gear of driving shaft 4 by 1-16. Driving shaft is manufactured in the form of bushing with lateral protrusion on its surface embracing driven spindle 5. Spindle 5 has closed groove in its upper surface to accommodate specified protrusion composed of two parts. One part is inclined towards rotation axis of driven spindle 5 at angle coinciding in direction with inclination angle of driven gear 10 and the other part is inclined towards rotation axis of spindle at angle opposite in direction to inclination angle of specified part of groove.
