FIELD: computer engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves combined physical drive of closed thin-film magnetic circuit of read-write head which contacts carrier across its width. Virtual space at narrow working part of magnetic circuit is caused by local reversible loss of magnetic conductance under temperature. This virtual space provides possibility to read and write information by means of standard magnetic reading-writing. Optical-electronic positioning and scanning of virtual space (row sweeping) is done without mechanical movement of head. Head with variable virtual space is manufactured according to integral planar technology. Head has magnetic circuit, electric winding, semiconductor laser diode, planar light guide with acoustic deflector and optical planar elements, single-crystal automatic tracking system, which are placed on single substrate. Operation modes that are provided by head with virtual space results in possibility to achieve surface density of 10 Mbit per sq. mm while data volume that is stored to VHS-cassette is more than 1 GB and transfer speed is up to 1 Mbit/sec. EFFECT: increased field of application for high-resolution TV, archival memory storage for distribution via magnetic media, for digital audio and video devices with possible multiple channels. 6 cl, 1 dwg, 1 tbl
