FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: solid component of catalyst for polymerization of ethylene or its copolymerization with a-olefin is prepared by suspending particles of silicium dioxide in ethanol solution of magnesium chloride. Then solid residue containing ethanol and magnesium chloride at their molar ratio 6:1 is isolated by evaporation at 50 C and at reduced pressure. The process is followed by heating to 120 C, ethanol being partially removed till molar ratio of ethanol:magnesium chloride is 2.8:1-3.0:1 and by reaction with at least on of titanium compound. Said reaction is carried out in alkane medium, said titanium compound being chosen of group which contains chlorides and alkoxides of tetravalent titanium and their mixture with silicium tetrachloride. Then aluminium alkyl chloride is added and solid precipitate is isolated. The process is carried out at atomic ratio of magnesium:titanium:aluminium 1:1:1.6-2.9:1:4, titanium content in reaction medium being 50-80 mg per 1 g of silicium dioxide. Particles which contain magnesium, titanium and chlorine at their atomic ratio 0.8:1.0:2.8-7.2:1.0:19.0 are used as solid component for catalyst of polymerization of ethylene and copolymerization of ethylene with a-olefin. Said catalyst contains (mole parts): organoaluminium compound 50-150, solid component 1. Production of (co)polymers of ethylene is carried out in the presence of catalyst which contains particles of magnesium, titanium and chlorine at their atomic ratio 0.8:1.0:2.8- 7.2:1.0:19.0 as solid component.
