FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: catalytic system for liquid phase preparation of methanol from synthesis gas, the ratio of components being as follows: 7-17 alkali metal methylate to copper (I) halide or hydride; 0.3-9.7 modifying agent selected from group consisting of methylate or oxide of element of lanthanum group or aluminium oxide to copper (I) halide or hydride. The catalytic system further comprises titanium methylate, the molar ratio of element of lanthanum group to titanium methylate being from 0.3 to 0.8. The process for preparing methanol from synthesis gas in liquid phase is carried out by reacting CO with H2 at their ratio being from 0.5 to 5.0 in the presence of said catalytic system and one or more solvents to which methanol and/or one or more alkyl formates are added in amount to adjust if methanol is added, methanol to copper molar ratio between 1 and 500, and if alkyl formate is added to adjust HCOORf to Cu molar ratio between 1 and 100 at temperature of higher than 40 C and lower than 200 C at concentration of copper in the solution formed from solvents and catalytic system to adjust molar ratio between 0.001 and 1. EFFECT: improved properties of the catalytic system. 17 cl
