FIELD: mechanical engineering; heat engines (machines) operating on liquid, gaseous, mixed, solid and other fuels using laser beam energy as source of ignition in combustion chambers. SUBSTANCE: energy pulse is formed by regulation in power and time according to empirical expression N = C1•t2•exp(-C2•N•t/m•RT) where N - energy action power, W; C1 - coefficient whose empirical values should be within 5•109÷ 1,25•1010,, W/s; t - time, c; C2 - nondimensional coefficient whose empirical values are within 6•107÷ 8•107,, No - minimum energy for fuel igniting, W; m - instantaneous mass of fuel mixture, kg; R - gas constant, J/kgK; T - temperature, K. power source in proposed system for generating pulse of preset shape is made in form of self-contained unit with electronic pulse shaper and in optically coupled with combustion chamber. Combustion chamber has hermetically sealed port closed by optically transparent material (commercial diamond) with thermal conductivity λ ≅ 20 W/cm K and linear expansion coefficient α ≅ 10-4 1/K. EFFECT: enlarged operating capabilities. 2 cl, 4 dwg, 1 tbl
