FIELD: devices for magnetic recording. SUBSTANCE: device uses cassette of first and second types which have equal size and shape excluding differentiating members of first and second types respectively. In addition device has driving units which are designed for engagement with cassette, when it is located in correct position. Driving units of device are of either first or second types for engagement with cassettes of first and second respectively. Both types of driving units have locking units of first and second types, respectively, which are designed for engagement with differentiating members of cassettes of different types. This results in acceptance of cassettes of first type by driving units of first type and not those of second type, while cassettes of second type are accepted by driving units of second type which do not accept cassettes of first type. If cassettes are inserted in incorrect position they are locked. EFFECT: increased functional capabilities. 11 cl, 16 dwg
