FIELD: electric-arc treatment of products. SUBSTANCE: method involves providing primary arc discharge between one of electrodes, connected to power sources with falling characteristic, and product so that plasma is formed; displacing arc discharge zone relative to product within the limits of portion of product to be treated; forming joint cathode spots occurrence zone on the surface of product portion under treatment and maintaining discharge current value in this zone ranging from average current value per one cathode spot to discharge current value per one electrode; maintaining subsequent arc discharges by cathode spots from the joint cathode spot occurrence zone. Cathode spots may be formed on product adjacent to primary arc discharge zone. Apparatus has screens positioned adjacent to electrodes and made in accordance with mathematic dependence defining predetermined area ratio of joint cathode spot occurrence zone and arc discharge zone. EFFECT: increased speed and improved quality of treatment of elongate products by increased stability of arc discharge combustion process. 5 cl, 5 dwg, 1 tbl
