FIELD: transportation of oil. SUBSTANCE: method consists in aerial photography of thermal field of pipe line route, determination of threshold magnitudes of brightness, determination of position of local sections at abnormal temperature, registration of magnitude of brightness of thermal field of local sections; besides that, laser probing of underlaying surface of pipe line route is performed at least at three lengths of radiation absorbing waves by main components of oil gas fraction and on bearing length of wave which is located in zone free of absorption of radiation by these components but rather close to them. Relative brightness of underlying surface is determined for each length of wave being studied and for each element of decomposition of image as ratio of underlying surface for each length of wave to brightness of underlying surface of bearing length of wave; then logarithms of relative brightness and average magnitude are determined; area of leakage is determined by position of section at abnormal temperature whose logarithm of relative brightness of image for first length of wave differs from average magnitude for entire section under test by preset threshold valve and logarithms of relative brightnesses of image for three waves form proportion (1± 0,2):(1,4± 0,2):(1,2±0,2).
