FIELD: mechanical engineering; internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: information on condition of internal combustion engine and its operating mode obtained by known methods is corrected by results of measurements of parameters of acoustic emission signals generated in process of operation of internal combustion engine by acoustic variable cavity resonators formed by above piston spaces of cylinders. Device to implement proposed method has number of channels equal to number of cylinders under checking. Each channel is acoustically coupled with corresponding cylinder of internal combustion engine through acoustic emission signal converter. All signals are processed on common time scale which makes it possible to bring to minimum influence of irregularity of cylinder operation which is one of causes affecting economy and reliability of internal combustion engine.
