FIELD: environment protection; cleaning exhaust gases from hard particles formed during combustion of hydrocarbon fuel in diesel engines of different applications. SUBSTANCE: flow of exhaust gases is passed first through afterburner and then through filtering element. Pressure of exhaust gases before and after filtering element and temperature of exhaust gases before afterburner (Tx1

) and after afterburner (Tx2
) are measured and if pressure differential across filtering element (ΔPx) exceeds maximum tolerable value (ΔPxmax
) exhaust gas flow is heated by delivering additional fuel to burn exhaust gases flow is heated by delivering additional fuel to burn exhaust gases in oxygen. Used as ΔPxmax
is preset function of measured values of relative speed of engine rotor and temperature Tx1
before afterburner. If temperature of filtering element differs from preset value (Tфmax), heating of flow is decreased or increased as necessary, by regulating consumption of additional fuel. Then volume concentration of oxygen in exhaust gas flow before afterburner (O2) is measured and flow is heated in case when ΔPx exceeds ΔPxmax
and oxygen content (O2) exceeds minimum tolerable value ((O2)min). Flow is heated until ΔPx is smaller than preset minimum tolerable value (ΔPxmin
