FIELD: security. SUBSTANCE: source of fast neutrons forming of intermediate neutrons with duration not exceeding time of slowing-down of neutrons in explosive is used to detect explosives in baggage. Neutrons with lower limiting energy not less than energy of hydrogen binding in molecule are isolated and used to irradiate content of baggage. In this case reaction of elastic scattering of intermediate neutrons on nuclei of hydrogen of explosive is used to form flux of thermal neutrons in the latter. Gamma radiation of capture of thermal neutrons by elements included in composition of explosive, mainly nitrogen and hydrogen, is registered and used to check concentration of these elements inside baggage. After check of concentration of mentioned elements presence of explosive is additionally checked by time of slowing-down of neutrons and by lifetime of thermal neutrons in zones of increased contact of nitrogen and/or hydrogen.
