FIELD: preparation of titanium chlorides, more particularly titanium tetrachloride. SUBSTANCE: titanium slags or ylmenite or perovskite or rutile or armalcolite or fassaite is subjected to nitration at 1000-1800 C in reducing medium of carbon particles. The resulting matrix comprising titanium nitride is chlorated with chlorinating agent at 200-500 C, to provide the resulting titanium tetrachloride.
