FIELD: metallurgy, in particular, steel melting in electric arc furnaces. SUBSTANCE: method includes charging the furnace, its heating with electric arcs and displacement over the surface of charge of flames of burners, injectors or lances, and subsequent melting of charge. Burner flames are successively and by cycles moved over the surface of charge, and intensity of heat radiation, for instance, radiation temperature is measured over the area of heating at stationary position of burner prior to the beginning and in the process of heating of the current area of charge surface, and obtained results are compared. When the value of radiation intensity rises by 5-90% of its initial value, the burner flame is moved to the next area of charge surface. EFFECT: higher efficiency of charge heating and productivity of steel melting. 2 cl, 1 tbl
