FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to steel smelting process wherein blend is charged into electric furnace, heated, and smelted. Furnace gas is removed from smelting chamber through vents in walls or in roof of furnace by means of valve- equipped smoke extractors. Before the blend is charged, L-shaped pipe is introduced into smelting chamber through working door, and blend is charged to the level surpassing the upper level of door by 0.1- 0.95 of distance from this level of working door to upper end of side walls of furnace. Blend is then heated with arcs, whereas furnace gas is being withdrawn during period of time equal to 0.1-0.5 of blend smelting time through L-shaped pipe with gas-outlet vent in furnace wall or roof being closed. Thereafter, L-shaped pipe is removed from smelting chamber and furnace gas is being withdrawn through gas- outlet vent. In addition, during the heating of blend, furnace gas is withdrawn alternately both through L-shaped pipe and through gas- outlet vent. During this time, smelting chamber is alternately supplied with heated furnace gases from other fusion of the same furnace, from other steel-smelting assembly, or from heating furnace. Steel-smelting assembly includes casing of electric furnace with working door in side wall and gas-inlet vent in the roof or side wall. Assembly is provided with L-shaped pipe mounted on a support suitably for drive-actuated pivoting in horizontal plane to be introduced into working door of furnace with its end part. This end part has box-like section with transverse dimension comparable with dimension of working door. Lower part of end part of L-shaped pipe is flat and upper one inclined to lower face.
