FIELD: metallurgy, in particular, processes and designs of devices for afterburning of effluent gases from steel melting units. SUBSTANCE: method includes supply of oxygen jets to the working space of steel melting unit above metal level. Oxygen jets are oriented in tangential direction to refractory surface of diffuser. Afterburning of combustible gases is effected on the refractory surface. The device includes body of lance with pipelines. Lance body is made in form of diffuser with opening angle of 140-179 deg, and diffuser top has cylindrical sleeve with bottom. Pipelines are running to the sleeve along tangent in horizontal plane. Diffuser body is made of refractory material, for instance, corundum, mullite- corundum or periclase-chromate. Besides, diffuser body is metallic and water- cooled and its internal surface is coated with refractory material. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 7 cl, 2 dwg
