FIELD: detection and ranging, passive methods of discrimination of objects against distant background, specifically, detection of foreign objects in safeguarded zone. SUBSTANCE: proposed method of discrimination of objects consists in reception of radiations of objects and background, in formation of images of objects and background, in registration of images and background, in registration of images of object and background in plane of image formation corresponding to a priori range to object. After reception of radiation image of objects and background is formed additionally with simultaneous registration of it in plane displaced relative to plane of formation of first image. Then first and second registered images are converted to first and second two-gradation images. Converted images are matched spatially and regions of second image located inside corresponding regions of first image are isolated and marked. After registration of outlines of isolated regions of second image one isolates fragment from matched converted images related to marked region of image. Difference of dimensions of selected fragment and corresponding region of first converted image is measured and used to determine value of defocusing of marked image. Focused image is formed by which object is discriminated. EFFECT: enhanced probability of discrimination of objects distant to finite range with a priori unknown distant background. 3 dwg
