FIELD: disinfection and sterilization of water, particularly water coming from cold water sources, using ultraviolet (UV) radiation. SUBSTANCE: water to be UV-treated is caused to flow through irradiation zone exposed to radiation from mercury low-pressure UV lamp enclosed in sheathing radiation-pervious tube. Electric contacts of lamp are connected to starting-and-controlling apparatus. Operating current value of mercury lamp accounts for 0.80-0.98 of nominal operating current value. Said starting-and-controlling apparatus is inductive-type starter having inductance accounting for 0.75-0.90 of nominal efficiency. EFFECT: reliable method for decontaminating cold water coming from unfamiliar cold water sources. 2 cl, 1 dwg
