FIELD: inorganic sorbents. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to preparing sorbents based on metal oxyhydrates with special attention to rare-earth metal, in particular yttrium, which can be used in hydrometallurgy for treating solutions of various rare-earth elements and producing pure samples of these elements. Novelty consists in that, when preparing rare-earth element-based sorbent, soluble yttrium salt is used, to which an alkali is added within pH ranges 8.4-8.6 or 8.9-9.1 followed by stirring for 2.4-2.6 h and incubation in mother liquor at pH 8.1-8.3 or 8.6-8.8 to attain stabilization of composition. The thus formed gel is filtered off, dried to air-dry state, and placed into water to produce granulated sorbent. EFFECT: improved preparation procedure and enlarged choice of sorbents. 1 tbl
