FIELD: charcoal production. SUBSTANCE: method includes preliminarily drying wood to moisture content 10-25% followed by thermal treatment in presence of gaseous heat carrier in continuous process mode including consecutively passing wood through finish drying zone, pyrolysis zone to form charcoal, which is finally incinerated and cooled with countercurrent feeding cooling agent. As the latter, smoke fumes from complete combustion of fuel are used containing 1.5-7.0% oxygen. These fumes, after passage through cooling zone, are used as heat carrier in incineration, pyrolysis, and finish drying zones. As smoke fumes from complete combustion of fuel, those withdrawn from preliminary drying of wood are used. EFFECT: simplified process due to utilizing the same heat carrier in all process stages and improved quality of product. 2 cl, 1 dwg
