FIELD: metal working; making grooves on dies and moulding tools. SUBSTANCE: in proposed method laser beam is directed at angle to article and is moved in reciprocating manner over paths located close to each other. Grove is made layer by layer in several passes. Beam is turned through preset angle in one pass and article is moved in reciprocating manner over arc of circumference relative to axis of turning of laser beam. Device to implement the proposed method has housing installed on bed frame, working table installed for reciprocating in horizontal plane, laser with laser head, laser beam moving and focusing members, laser head reciprocating motion drive to provide movement of laser head in horizontal direction square to reciprocation of working table, and system of program control of laser and travel motion drives. Laser head is installed for turning relative to horizontal axis. Working table is installed for travel vertically and for turning relative to horizontal and vertical axes.
