MAGNETIC COMPASS AND METHOD FOR DISPLACING CENTER OF MASS OF ITS MAGNETIC SYSTEM Russian patent published in 1997 - IPC

Abstract RU 2086920 C1

FIELD: magnetic compasses including those for sport orienting and tourism. SUBSTANCE: compass housing incorporates a system mounted movably on two supports and provided with rigidly secured magnetized member. The center of mass of this system is displaced from the axis of its rotation at the right angle to this axis in direction of the south pole of the magnet, if the compass is used in the northern hemisphere of the Earth, and in direction of the north pole of the magnet, if the compass is used in the southern hemisphere. Value of shift is determined from the equation , where 0 < n < 2; M is magnetic moment of the magnet; Ha is vertical component of the strength of the magnetic field of the Earth; P is the weight of the movable magnetic system in the working medium. When executing the method of displacement of center of mass, the magnetic system is installed on two supports and the center of mass is displaced along the line connecting the poles of the magnetic system. For this purpose the axis of rotation is positioned at any arbitrary angle γ to the vertical in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic meridian. The line connecting the poles of the magnetic system shall be positioned at an angle of b, which is found from the mentioned equation. Center of mass of the magnetic system is displaced by increasing or reducing the mass of the magnetic system on the line connecting the poles of the magnetic system. EFFECT: improved accuracy.
