FIELD: environment control, particular, cleaning of surface of water and ground from pollutions of oil and oil products spilled in emergencies, for instance, on oil and oil product pipelines. SUBSTANCE: the offered method includes application to surface to be cleaned of cotton-containing sorbent with its subsequent gathering and utilization of oil and oil products. Cotton-containing sorbent is formed into mats whose outer side is preliminarily treated by spring with a thin layer of machine or transformer oil. In this case, layer of cotton-containing sorbent in mat is fixed between layers of cotton or synthetic cloth of loose weave or cotton net with interval between fibers of cloth or size of net mesh fixing sorbent in mat smaller than the size of particles of cotton-containing sorbent. Mat length and width are made within 0.5-1 mm and its thickness whose ratio to thickness of layer of spilled oil amounting to (0-5:1)-(1:1). Cotton-containing sorbent is used in form of cotton wastes of spinning. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 4 tbl
