FIELD: metal working. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to thermochemical treatment and may find use in mechanical engineering and machine tool industry to strengthen cutting and forging tools as well as parts of machines and mechanisms made of structural steel. Method consists in submitting steel objects to nitriding under thermocyclic conditions. Process is carried out in ionized atmosphere only in cooling cycle, heat cycling being performed within temperature range by 10-30 C below steel drawing temperature in heating phase and by 70-170 C in cooling phase. EFFECT: improved performance characteristics, increased hardness and wear resistance of objects made of high-alloyed martensite steels; reduced cost. 2 cl, 2 tbl
