FIELD: mechanical engineering; cold starting of internal combustion engines with afterburner installed before catalytic converter in direction of exhaust gas flow. SUBSTANCE: method comes to delivery of additional excess fuel into fuel mixture charge of engine and addition of air to make them get into engine exhaust gases and provide presence of hydrogen and oxygen in mixture of exhaust gases and air directly after first ignition. Concentration of hydrogen and oxygen should be sufficient for ignition of obtained mixture of exhaust gases and air and their burning in form of stable flame in afterburner at temperature close to ambient temperature and ignition of indicated mixture of exhaust gases and air in afterburner just after first ignition in engine. Introduction of excess fuel and/or additional air is regulated, preferably, after ignition in afterburner until part of base of catalytic converter reaches the firing temperature.
