SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in internal combustion engines. Engine operation method consists in the fact, that one or more of the engine cylinders (31) are selectively switched off by means of the disconnectable fuel injectors. With the cylinders (31) next switching on, adjusting the air-fuel ratio depending on the change in the accumulated in the first exhaust gases catalytic converter (70A), (70B) ammonia content, in order to regenerate the exhaust gases second catalytic converter (82A), (82B) and/or the exhaust gases third catalytic converter (84A), (84B). Taking into account the change that occurred during the cylinders (31) selective deactivation immediately before their next inclusion. Disclosed are engine operating method embodiments.
EFFECT: technical result consists in the fuel amount reduction required for the adjacent catalyst regeneration and the end three-component neutralizer.
