FIELD: railway transport; manufacture of rails. SUBSTANCE: prior to welding, explosive charge 1 is placed on rolling surface of each end of rails to be welded. Charge 1 is exploded by detonator 8. Detonation wave of charge excites sliding shock wave in rail. Amplitude of shock wave in zone of rail pad 6 is greater than in zone of direct contact between charge and rail surface. This provides nonuniform strengthening of rail end and ensures maximum strengthening in zone of thermal influence of welded joint usually featuring reduced strength. After explosion, ends of rails are subjected to mechanical machining to remove burrs, are welded and subjected to mechanical and thermal machining of weld.
