FIELD: water treatment. SUBSTANCE: invention deals with treating water and producing high-quality drinking water from surface sources. In order to remove undesired impurities, such as dissolved chlorine, iron, manganese, nickel, and copper ions, and to form non-toxic or less toxic ions, water is brought in contact with particles of magnesium or its alloys. Water under treatment is supplemented with Mn(III,IV) oxide, porous carbon, or carbon particles with preliminarily applied Mn(III,IV oxides, after which water is passed through a bed containing the same particles fixed with regard to each other.
