FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: proposed method consists in determination of octane number of automobile gasoline by dependence $$$, where $$$ is dielectric permittivity; $$$ is density, g/cu.cm; $$$ are constant coefficients determined in process of calibration. Device determining octane number incorporates capacitive pickup 1 placed into frequency-dependent circuit of self-excited oscillator. Compensation elements 3 and 4 are connected in parallel to pickup 1. Temperature-sensitive element 6 is connected to element 3 through scaling amplifier 5, density pickup 8 is linked through second scaling amplifier 7 to element 4. Output of self-excited oscillator 2 is connected to computer 9 from which results go to indication unit 10. computer is connected to data input unit 11. Capacitive pickup has two coaxial cylindrical electrodes placed vertically. External electrode is set tight on nonconductive base. Density pickup is anchored outside external electrode and temperature-sensitive element is located inside capacitive pickup.
