FIELD: chemical industry; titanium dioxide production. SUBSTANCE: titanium tetrachloride is subjected to treatment with 20- to 55%-sulfuric acid solution, sulfuric acid concentration being adjusted to 60-70%. Resulting solution is heated up to 130-150 C. Titanyl sulfate thus-formed is precipitated in form of crystalline deposit. Latter is filtered off and dissolved in aqueous medium. Resulting solution is subjected to hydrolysis and titanium dioxide hydrate thus-obtained is calcinated to produce commercial rutile or anatase. EFFECT: new approach to production of pigmentary titanium dioxide.
